Meirelles created the Sabedoria Foundation with Appleby in Bermuda in December 2002 “specifically for charitable purposes.” While the foundation was active during Meirelles’ tenure as president of Brazil’s central bank, the foundation’s financial statements show relatively small amounts of money in its accounts: $9,030 in 2003 and $11,176 in 2008.
Two of its officers are attorneys with the New York law firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft.
