About

Henrique de Campos Meirelles took office as Brazil’s finance minister in May 2016 amid the impeachment proceedings of then-President Dilma Rousseff. Meirelles worked for BankBoston in the United States for nearly three decades, after which he served as Brazil’s top central banker from 2003 through 2011.

In the data

Meirelles created the Sabedoria Foundation with Appleby in Bermuda in December 2002 “specifically for charitable purposes.” While the foundation was active during Meirelles’ tenure as president of Brazil’s central bank, the foundation’s financial statements show relatively small amounts of money in its accounts: $9,030 in 2003 and $11,176 in 2008.

Two of its officers are attorneys with the New York law firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft.

Response

In a statement to ICIJ partner Poder360, Meirelles said the foundation is a charity set up to benefit Brazilian education after he dies and that he receives no benefit from it. “Therefore, this structure is not included in my Income Tax statements, as it should not be.”
